Many residents have been calling us wondering this one question. If the city is dumping raw sewage in the river, don't fecal particles that get tossed in the air that come in contact with people pose a serious health risk.
Regan Smith, the Sioux Falls Risk Manager says, "You know airborne not so much but in the flood waters people should consider the flood waters contaminated. We are discharging into the sanitary into the Big Sioux River. We are monitoring that and testing that at this time and reporting that to the state of South Dakota. So people should definitely steer clear of the Big Sioux River."
Smith also tells us, that if you are cleaning sewer from your basement or house, be sure to wear gloves and boots.
