Sioux Falls man arrested for 6 counts of child rape

Posted: Updated:

A 27-year-old Sioux Falls man is behind bars for six counts of first degree rape of a victim who is under age 13.

Kermit Myers is accused of raping the two daughters of a woman he was dating.

The incidents happened at a house in the 1300 block of East 3rd Street.

"It's sickening, that's so close!" Said Carrie Valle.

Carrie Valle is a mother of three and was shocked to learn that an alleged child rapist lived right next door.

Kermit Myers was arrested in February for raping the four-year-old and six-year-old daughters of his girlfriend.

"One of those girls disclosed that there was sexual contact between them and mom's boyfriend." Said Officer Sam Clemens.

According to court documents, Myers performed various sexual acts to both of the girls over a two month period beginning in October of last year.

Myers did not deny the allegations, but said that it was the six-year-old victim who initiated the sex and he never forced her to do anything.

He also denied any contact with the four year old, saying that she would only watch while he had sex her sister.

Carrie says she feels for these little girls but also for their mother.

"You get gentlemen who prey on single moms like this who maybe have issues and problems and can't always see the signs." Said Valle.

Detectives on the case would not release specifics, but they are concerned that Myers may have had contact with other children.

"We just ask if there's any knowledge or mention of children with this suspect that they call police with that information." Said Officer Clemens.

With two schools and a public park within walking distance of Myers residence, Valle says it's not hard to believe at all that more victims could be out there.

"The three to four blocks from school, this man is in between there just waiting for the kid that they see everyday." Said Valle.

Myers is in the Minnehaha County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.

Valle is glad that Myers is off the street but says she will continue to keep an extra eye on her kids.

"There are people who say let your kids live Carrie, no! Because they're not going to be one of these kids if I can help it." Said Valle.

Police are aware of a third victim but currently there are no charges filed against Myers for that third child.
