I tend to notice weird things. But lately this issue has become so obvious I just have to write about it. What is the deal with Michael Jackson songs popping up everywhere lately? A few examples:

 (1) "Thriller" being used as background music for some bottled water commercial featuring dancing lizards. No, I'm not kidding.
 (2) "Wanna Be Starting Something" used as music in promotional spots for "Desperate Housewives" on ABC.
 (3) Just yesterday, I heard the instrumental version of a Michael Jackson song in an infomercial for exercise equipment.

 Really? Wow. What is the deal? Whenever music is used like this, permission must be granted by the person who owns the rights to the music. I did some checking around and the person who owns the rights to Michael Jackson's music is....Michael Jackson. He is really selling the rights to some of his most popular hits to be used in commercials? It feels like a sell out to me. Remember when "Revolution" by The Beatles was used in a Nike commercial and the outcry there was? Do you know who owns the Beatles music catalog? MIchael Jackson. True story. In recent years, there have been tons of stories about MJ's financial troubles. Is this his way of solving them? If so, it just seems a little weird. That's all I'm saying. In an unrelated, but kind of related, story: a couple of days ago, I was listening on line to my favorite oldies radio station, KRTH in Los Angeles. Remember, it's an OLDIES station. They played "The Wall" by Michael Jackson. I instantly felt the need to take a calcium supplement and sit down. Wow. Time is flying by.
