Brian is working mornings Monday and Tuesday and wondering if he'll catch up on his sleep.

By Brian Allen

Today, with Chris Studer on vacation, my bosses at KSFY asked me to fill in on "Live In The Morning" and "Live At 11:30". I had no problem doing this. Variety being the spice of life, you need to mix it up every once in a while. I had a plan which I laid out beautifully and, like most of my plans, didn't work out the way I intended.

I went to bed last night at 6:15, hoping to get a good couple hours of sleep. Something I thought I achieved when I woke up feeling great and well rested. I rolled over and looked at the clock and it was 9:30. I had only slept just over three hours. The rest of the night I spent tossing and turning, probably trying too hard to sleep and ended up getting a pitiful amount.

When I walked in the door at KSFY at 3 this morning, I was doing pretty good. I made it through the two hour morning show with Valerie Gutierrez and Shawn Cable just fine. But at about 7:30 it really hit me; the fatigue, a little bit of nausea, the signs that I should have gotten more sleep than I did. By the end of the 11:30 news I was a wreck. My voice was starting to go (another sign I haven't had enough sleep). Then I had to go to a meeting which lasted about an hour and a half. When i finally got out of there at about 1:30 this afternoon, I truly had a tough time staying awake for the drive home. I put the windows down and let the wind slap me around.

When I got home, I knew nappy time was a real option. I picked up Austin and Cameron, gave them both hugs and asked them if they wanted to take a nap with Dad. Cameron just started at me and Austin said "No". I then promised Austin everything short of a pony to get him to take a nap. Which he did. As a trio, we ended up with probably a 2-and-a-half hour nap. I woke up, still not fully refreshed but doing better than I had been.

Austin, Cameron and I went outside and I watched them play in the front yard (Mandy had a hair appointment that, given by the time it took was either (A) really expensive, or (B) at a salon in Chicago. She finally came home and we sat down to a dinner of homemade sub sandwiches (yum) and as I write this I am getting ready to pop two aspirin and go to bed again so I can anchor the morning news again tomorrow. Hopefully my efforts at sleep tonight will go better than last night. Hope you tune in and I hope I am coherent.

Quote Of The Day: "Life is something that happens when you can't get to sleep." Fran Lebowitz

This Day In History: New Orleans was founded by French settlers and named after the Duke Of Orelans on this date, August 25th, 1718.

Something You Should Check Out: In 1966, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys tried an experimental album which sounded different from their normal "surf fare". What they came up with was "Pet Sounds" and one of the sleeper hits from the album was a song called "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times". Take a listen and marvel at the idea that it's THE BEACH BOYS doing this song!
