((Brian's Note: Edward Lawrence and I worked together as reporter/anchors at KLAS Television in Las Vegas. He and always had a friendly (and sometimes unfriendly) competition with each other as to who had the better story, better live shot, et cetera. Edward is a good guy with a good news sense and a professional delivery.))
I have been thinking a lot about what to say. I think that in my life I have tried to follow one message. It's a message that I think your viewers at KSFY can benefit from hearing. You can do anything you set your mind too.
This message manifests itself in many ways in my life. I will just discuss one. Four years ago I started to gain weight. I did not like what I saw in the mirror and told myself I was going to do something about it. At that same time, Las Vegas started the first Marathon that runs down the Las Vegas Strip. In June of 2004 I decided I was going to run that Marathon. I have played soccer my entire life. As a soccer player you run in spurts for 90 minutes. I have never run continuously long distances.
At 5'10" 186 pounds in 2004 I set out running with my sights on 26.2 miles. I found a running group called the Las Vegas Roadrunners. They meet once a week, Sunday morning at 5:30AM. You can imagine what that does to my Saturday night. The Roadrunners had a running schedule for me to follow throughout the week. We started with one mile on Sunday and worked up. It was a 28 week grueling training program. In the heart of the training, the big run at 10, 11, 12, 15 miles on Sunday would take hours at the crack of dawn. What made it worse for me is that I had to drive about an hour to get to that run.
The running during the week in the middle of the program was 25 minutes Monday, 60 minutes Tuesday, 45 minutes Wednesday, off on Thursday, 50 minutes on Friday, and off on Saturday. It took an enormous amount of my time. After working 10 to 12 hours a day I would follow the program.
There was sweat. I questioned myself. I questioned if I should continue. I got minor injuries that set me back. Through nothing more that will power and the belief in myself, I finished the program. The day of the Marathon went smoothly. I finished my first in four hours and 51 minutes. My weight the day of the run was 168 pounds. Today, I am training for my fourth Marathon. I ran last years in four hours and 39 minutes.
I did it. You can do anything you set your mind too.
((Brian's Note: I remember when Edward ran that first Las Vegas Marathon. He was proud of his accomplishment. I hope he knows a lot of us in the newsroom were proud of him as well. Feel free to leave a comment below or send in an e-mail by clicking here.))
