The Unintended Comedy Provided By British Tourists

These incidents weren't suppose to be funny but they were!

By Brian Allen

 On my recent trip to Italy, I saw many things and visited many places which will stay with me for the rest of my days.

 Something that will also stay with me for a long time was the unintended comedy I got to experience by witnessing British tourists in action. It really was something else and I'm going to tell you about two episodes in particular that stand out.

 While I was Venice, I was standing in line at a Gelato (ice cream) store in St. Mark's Square. The woman in front of me completed her transaction and I was next. As I stepped forward, a French woman stepped right in front of me and proceeded to order Gelato for her and her SEVEN friends. I'm a fairly laid back guy so I didn't make a fuss. I knew they wouldn't run out of Gelato and I wasn't going to let this woman's rudeness bother me. Thankfully, there was an old British couple in line behind me. As the French woman started in on her fourth Gelato order, the little British woman looked at the French woman and said out loud in a loud voice;

 "Oh...you are going to get sick. I hope you get sick. So rude. YOU WILL GET SICK!"

 I was in awe. At once it was the most surprising and one of the greatest things I had seen. I wanted to pop some popcorn, sit down and see what would happen next. I wouldn't have to wait long. As Frenchie ordered her seventh Gelato, the British woman's husband got in on the act by saying, again out loud...

 "Oh COME ON!"

 The disdain was like dripping venom. I wondered if I would have to move to not get in the way of the fist fight. Frenchie must have figured out the British couple was talking about her because she looked at them and said something in French then shrugged her shoulders. The British woman was quick to react.

 "Well that's what happen when you cut in line you rude woman!"

 I don't even think I tried to contain my glee. Rightly or wrongly, THIS WAS GREAT! Finally, Frenchie finished buying Gelato for her and her friends. It was my turn and the British woman said to me, sweet as could be;

 "Go ahead and order dear."

 I looked around as I ordered to see if Benny Hill would somehow appear and run through St. Mark's Square. But my experiences with British tourists didn't end there.

 Don't ask me why (because I have no idea) but some public restroooms in Italy allow you to wash your hands but give you no way whatsoever to dry your hands. I was waiting for my travel group to finish using the restrooms when a Britihsh woman walked out and approached her husband and said the following:

 "That's insane! You can wash your hands but you can't dry them!!"

 The husband's eyebrows raised and he said:

 "There's NOTHING you can use to dry your hands?"

 The woman responded in a frustrated tone:

 "Absolutely NOTHING!"

 I recanted these two stories to the folks in my travel group and they laughed every time so I know it's not just me who thought it was funny. I think it's a combination of the clipped British accent mixed with disdain that is so funny. Thinking about it now I am laughing out loud.

 Something You Should Check Out: You know I am a fan of old Top 40 radio. One of the best in the biz was a guy named Dan Ingram who, for years, worked at WABC Radio in New York. Take a listen and see why this guy had 25 million daily listeners back in the day!
