My Growing Fascination With "Life On Mars"

Do you watch "Life On Mars"? You should be!

By Brian Allen

Surprisingly, for a guy who works in TV news, I don't really watch a lot of television. So when I do watch something (that isn't news), it has to really get my attention.

The latest show to catch my attention (and keep it) is "Life On Mars". It's on Thursday nights at 9PM here on KSFY. The basic plot line in a nutshell: a New York cop in 2008 gets hit by a car. When he wakes up, he's in 1973. He's still a cop. He has a car which is registered to him. He has an apartment in his name and a job where people know him. How is any of this possible? That's what the main character, Sam Tyler, is trying to figure out. He confides in one of his fellow cops that the only way this makes any sense is if he is a time traveler, if he is insane or if he's in a coma in 2008 and imagining the entire thing. As Sam tries to figure all of this out, he continues his duties as a cop, helping solve crimes in 1973 New York.

I think this show is fascinating. The storytelling is brilliant and mysterious. The case is great: Jason O'Meara, Gretchen Mol, Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli are fantastic. The story is such an upside down twist that now I have to DVR and watch it for clues as to what might be happening. In one recent episode, Sam is at a 1970's disco, but looks across the room and sees a kid which a 1990's Nirvana t-shirt on. What? Sam shakes his head and the kid is gone. Was he there in the first place or is Sam imagining everything?

The ABC version of "Life On Mars" is based on a series of the same name on the BBC. They mirror each other closely. First, watch the extended promo for ABC's "Life On Mars" then check out the BBC promo. Pretty interesting stuff.

I am now hooked on watching this show. I DVR it every Thursday and look forward to analyzing it for clues. It's a puzzle and I have idea, no clue, no theory about it at all. I can't wait to watch it all play out.

This Day In History: Walt Disney's "Fantasia" debuted on this date, November 13th, 1940.

Something You Should Check Out: Do me a favor, watch "Life On Mars" next Thursday night at 9PM on KSFY then email me and tell me what you think of the show (and what you think is really happening to Sam).
