Something bad happened today to three people I care about. Their names are Frosty Stilwell, Heidi Hamilton and Frank Kramer.
Maybe I should clarify that. I don't really "know" them, but I feel as if I do. All three hosted a show on KLSX-FM in Los Angeles called, appropriately enough, "Frosty, Heidi & Frank". It's a talk show but it's not dry and boring. They talk about everything under the sun; how tough it is to buy Christmas gifts, tattoos, traffic problems, racism, religion, I mean everything. But it sounds exactly like the type of conversation you would have if you were just sitting around with a couple of friends...jabbering about the day. Their humor is a little bawdy and naughty and not meant for all audiences. But for those who get it and appreicate it, it's something else.
All three of them have wicked senses of humor and the quickest wit you could ever hope for. They have all been friends for a long time and it shows. As a result, you feel like their friend.
All three mean the world to me for a single reason: they brought smiles to my face when I didn't think anything else would.
Here's the scene: I was between jobs and unsure where my next pay check would come from. I was working a fairly steady freelance job which allowed money to come in but the job was 50 miles away, meaning a lot of time in the car. I also had the added pressure of a wife and one child with another one on the way. In short, it was a bad, stressful time. Frosty, Heidi and Frank helped me throguh that tough time.
I learned about Frosty, Heidi and Frank while I was working at KLAS Television in Las Vegas. Most every spare moment we had, Mandy and I (and later Austin, Mandy and I) would be in Los Angeles, going to the beach and Disneyland and Malibu and listening to FH&F.
So once we moved away from Las Vegas and Los Angeles, I found their podcast on I Tunes and made it part of my routine. They would keep me company when I needed it. And when I really needed them to make me smile, laugh and remember that life is more good than bad...they came through...just by doing what they do. Their job.
So when I got back on my feet one of the first things I did was write them a letter, telling them how much they mean to me and what they did to keep me positive about life. Surprisingly, they wrote me back. Wow. What a classy bunch. Since then, I have maintained sporadic contact with Frosty, Heidi and Frank through e-mails.
Which brings me to today. Today, Frosty, Heidi and Frank were fired by KLSX. The company which owns the stations says they want to go in a different direction and they are flipping the station from talk to Top 40 music. This is crushing to me and obviously to them. What makes this ever harder to fathom: FH&F are #1 in their time slot, meaning when their show is on, most of the people in Los Angeles are listening to them.
So now they are on the beach and it hurts to know they are suffering. There's nothing I can do for them. I am trying to pay them back, somewhat, by daily e-mailing them jokes hoping it makes them laugh and feel better the way they helped me to feel better.
They are talented. They should be on the air somewhere and I sure hope they land something soon.
Quote Of The Day: "We're Frosty, Heidi and Frank." Tag line said usually by Frosty Stilwell or Frank Kramer when their show would need to take a commercial break.
This Day In History: John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on this date, February 20th, 1962.
Something You Should Check Out: The heartbreaking final two minutes of "Frosty, Heidi and Frank" on KLSX-FM in Los Angeles. Frank would always tease people about getting emotional and crying. To hear him break down is tough. To hear all of them say good-bye is very tough.
