I Didn't Even Realize

This weekend I went to a wedding of a few friends of mine who were kind enough to invite me despite the fact that they've only known me for about 9 months. I also had an Aunt and a friend from college get married this weekend. Obviously I wish I could have made it to all of them but given the travel situation it was nearly impossible. However, I got to thinking about other times I've been involved with weddings. When I got to thinking about it I realized that I hadn't really been to a wedding without ever being in the wedding. That was a thought that took me a long way.

I got to thinking about when I was younger and I was in many weddings as an Usher. It was a minor role but always made me feel rather special. Of course I got to be in the pictures and hang out with the wedding party and all that good stuff. Quite an honor to say the least.

Then I got tho thinking of the first wedding that I remember going to or being a part of. It was when my father married my step-mother back in 1992. That put me at the age of 8. It was a quiet wedding over all, as quiet as it could be given my step-mother's family with her six siblings (they get the inside joke and I wouldn't have family gatherings any other way). Regardless of the weddings size or meaning it was an important day to me for many reasons.

Gaining a step-mother, becoming part of a family and celebrating something with my father are all reasons that it was an important day. The most important and memorable part of the day was where my Dad asked me to stand. Not as an Usher or groomsman, or anything else (which all would have been an honor), but right next to him as his best-man. What an honor, given all of the other men he could have picked.

At the time I was more concerned with just making it down the aisle without falling down. Trust me, it was a problem when I was younger (many would claim its still a problem). Now that I'm older and understand things better I realize what it really meant. I got to be the closest witness to my father getting married. That's a great thing to be a part of and something that many people don't get to do. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and be a bit more grown up so I would understand what it meant. However, not a day goes by that I don't feel honored he picked me.
