Cutting Horsepower?

Ok, I know it seems like I'm trying to rip NASCAR a lot in my blogs. Really, I love the sport. I never miss watching a race if I can help it and always defend the sport when people who do not like it tell me about not liking it. However, I am really scratching my head over the latest move by NASCAR.

I read in an article that NASCAR is cutting the Horsepower of some Toyota cars because they're "producing more horsepower than other engines." What? Aren't we racing? Isn't the point of racing not only to have the best driver but to have the best car? To me this is a wrong move by NASCAR. Rather then cutting the power of one of the manufactures, I would rather see the other manufactures pick it up. Isn't that the whole point of competition?

I've never heard of such a move by any racing league or any other sport for that matter. Imagine if the IFL asked the storm to not train as hard for the season because they're better than the other teams. Storm fans would be irate, as Toyota fans should be in this situation. I participated in Go-Kart racing for a bit while in college. Actually it was only an annual race that was held at Purdue that I did for three years. Half of the battle was getting an engine to produce more horsepower. Everyone had the same size engine, but they were made by different people. Therefore part of the competition was to have a powerful motor.

Let's also think about what NASCAR is actually supposed to be. NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. The most important part of that is STOCK CAR, as in just off the assembly line. Well I wouldn't expect the racing to get back to that type, but how are we even sticking to "stock cars" at all by changing the horsepower the engine makes? I realize that the cars need to be changed for safety reasons, but let's let the manufacturers compete too.

I wonder if any of this has to do with a non-American manufacturer beating American cars in an American sport. I feel the pain of that as I would like to see American cars succeed, but let's beat them fairly. Also Chevy, Dodge, and Ford have all been competitive this year. It's not like Toyota is winning every race. They have won a majority in the Nationwide series, but that is not the top level, so Chevy, Dodge and Ford should care a bit less.

I know we have a lot of viewers who are NASCAR fans and I would like to hear other fan's opinions too. So leave some comments in the comments section so I can hear back on this. Like I said, I'm not going to stop watching the racing because of this. I know I'll be right in front of my TV on Sunday when they go racing at my home track. I'll just be a bit angry since my favorite driver does drive a Toyota!

Jennifer, Thanks for watching! Yes, I do like NASCAR, although I am more of an Indy and F-1 fan. Hendrick was very dominate last year. However, they really didn't do much to Chevy that year, so I wish they'd be more consistant After watching this last race, they need to focus on thier tire maker more than anything. Uncle Harlan, I'm glad you still realize my position in the family and that you agreed with me. Even though we won't be in agreement come basketball season.

Derrick, I believe the only reason Nascar cut the horsepower for the Toyotas was to level the playing field. As of now, the other manufacturers have caught up to the Toyotas. The Toyota dominance reminds me of last year when Hendrick Motorsports was so good. You just never know with Nascar though. Anyway, never knew you liked NASCAR, Derrick! Love watchin you on KSFY!

Derrick, I also read the article on restricting horespower on the Toyota's. It didn't sound right to me, but I'm not really a big race fan. Now, since you are the family racing expert and you don't understand it either then I guess we can both agree on this issue, it isn't right!!
