Many people don't know who my favorite sports figure is. It's not a Colt, Drew Brees or any of the Andrettis. Peyton Manning, John Wooden, Reggie Miller and Mario Andretti are most likely the four men that round out the top five, but they're not even close to number one. Believe it or not, its Lance Armstrong and for more than what he does on a bike.
This man was given something like a 10 percent chance of living (don't quote me on that). He took that 10 percent, beat cancer and then won the most grueling sporting event seven times in a row. He's more than a great athlete, he's a great figure on what any person can do after beating cancer. That's why in my book he's the biggest sport figure.
If you didn't hear the news, he plans to compete once again in the Tour de France. I think that anyone who thinks he's not going to be in contention is most likely wrong. This man is a machine. I read that he will spend up to 16 hours on a bike a day. My rear end hurts just thinking about that.
I'm not a person who likes cycling. Its rather boring. I do think its neat that something as simple as riding a bike can be turned into one of the largest sporting events in the world. Think about all those times you raced your friends on a bike when you were younger. There is no doubt that its the hardest to compete in too. Remember climbing hills on a bike? Yea, I got off of the seat too and pushed my bike up the hill. I can't imagine if it were a mountain.
So next July I'll be glued to the TV once again looking for updates. If he wins an eight time it might be the greatest sports feat of all time. Include that he's a cancer survivor, and its one of the greatest achievements by a man, not just athletes.
