Record Setting Cold For 7/18/09

Some nearly perfect setups have allowed for some relatively cold nights across the KSFY viewing area. The impressive thing is that these cold nights haven't been because of a cold front moving in or an Arctic high pressure parking itself over the area. Here's what's lead to these cold nights:

1. Days that are relatively cool

2. Clear skies in the overnight

3. Calm winds.

The first point on there just marks the starting spot. Because we're not getting up to 90 degrees, rather lower 80 and even upper 70s, it doesn't take as long to drop to the upper 50s. The clear skies along with the calm winds allow all the heat to rise much quicker than a night with a breeze or some moisture in the air.

There were also lows tied at Sioux Falls at 50 and Watertown at 45. Normally this time of year we're have a high of 86 and a low of 61 in Sioux Falls.
