This will be brief as it's 4:40 and I just pulled into the driveway. My wife will be getting up soon to head to work, so I'd like to at least get into my REM sleep before she gets up.
A quick peak at the SDSU/ISU box score will lead you to believe ISU had their way with SDSU all night. As Lee Corso says, "Not so fast my friend." The problem was costly turnovers. Three times in the first half the Jacks were in position to put points on the board only to throw a pick. The most crucial one came with the Jacks down just 13....The Cyclones turned that pick into seven and went into the locker room up 20-0 and sucked a lot of life right out of the Jacks. The Jacks had a chance to give ISU a scare, but they couldn't capitalize. Welcome to Division I football. Now by no means am I saying SDSU would have won, but being down 13-7 (should they have scored) instead of 20-0 is a different ball game.
Couple other thoughts on the game. The Jacks indeed moved the ball on offense. But I'm perplexed as to why they never attempted to stretch the field? They ran the bubble screen countless times with some of the times succeeding and others not so much (I still think some of the Jacks are buried in the Jack Trice Stadium turf after some of the hits they took). Kyle Minnett is the real deal. The kid from RTR rushed for 100 yards against ISU. If they would have tried to stretch the field, could Minnett have put up even bigger numbers?
On defense, the Jacks weren't tossed around by the BCS school. Yeah, they gave up some yards and some points, but more often than not, they were put in a bad position by their mates on the other side of the ball.
I thought Iowa State tried to intimidate the Jacks early on, which resulted in numerous Personal Foul penalties on ISU. The Jacks looked nervous on their first series, but after that, to me, they didn't seemed fazed by the crowd or the atmosphere. They definitley held their own out there.
SDSU had a chance to make this a game, but a rare off night by senior QB Ryan Berry left them extremely disappointed. I think we'll get a real understanding of this team next week when they host perennial power Youngstown State. If they make the same mistakes next week, then I think it could be a long year....but remember, SDSU was a huge underdog in this one, and was not expected to win.
I'll have much much more on Thursday's game tonight at six
Off to bed to try and rest up for week one of Friday Night Lights.
