Noisy Shoes

By Leslie Rupiper

These are the shoes I'm wearing today.  There's nothing impressive about them, they're just regular summer sandals.  I don't usually wear sandals to work, but I wore them because my feet were a little tired from a long night of election coverage. (You wouldn't think sitting at the news desk takes a toll on your feet, would you?) Okay, maybe it's just an excuse to wear the shoes.  I got them this weekend, and thought I'd try them out.  I slipped them on just before I left the house and noticed that for simple sandals, these shoes were really quite noisy.

When I walked into work, I discovered the shoes were actually embarrassingly loud.  Male co-workers who don't usually take note of the shoes I wear, couldn't help but comment about them.  They didn't say they were cute...they just said they made a lot of noise.  Not a good sign.  I tried to see if there was a way I could walk that would make them quieter.  There isn't.  I've determined it's either the padding on the shoe that makes a lot of noise when the sandals slap against the bottoms of my feet, or it's the hollow cork that makes up the heel.

One of my female co-workers said, "I wonder if shoe makers ever think about checking how much noise shoes make when people walk."  I'm guessing they might not.  At least the makers of my shoes didn't.  If they did, they'd know these just don't cut it.  It's a good thing I work in a noisy newsroom and not...a library. I'd probably get sent home to change.

Despite the fluffy nature of this blog, I shudder to think how society has trained women to wear unhealthy unsupportive shoes because they are "fashionable". I bet podiatrists see a lot more women with foot and heal problems than men. I empathize with you, but i can't feel your pain. After all, i am a man in comfortable shoes. :) In truth and peace, :)
