Tomato Plants, Scandinavians, Picnics & More!

By Leslie Rupiper

Happy Monday! I promised to update just how much I got accomplished this past weekend, and I have to say, I think fiance Thom and I did pretty well.  Saturday morning, I headed down to the Farmers Market, and did find a tomato plant to take home.  It's already in a huge pot and has a cage, so I'm good to go. Now I just hope it grows fast and starts producing some tomatoes before the summer is up.  I then went to Thom's house and we visited the Augustana Campus for Nordland Fest. It was around lunchtime, so we ate some Scandinavian fare that I'd never had before. I also have to make a quick clarification.  I'm marrying someone with Swedish roots, not Norwegian.  I told Thom about Friday's blog and he was quick to tell me about his Swedish ancestry.  At the craft fair, I picked up some organic catnip for Thom's cat and also found a little note pad that says, "Uff Da" on it.  I'd heard that expression growing up, even though my family is German and not Scandinavian.  When I saw it on the stationery, I couldn't resist it.  The lady who sold it to me, said "Uff Da" can mean all kinds of things.  To me, it seems like an expression of exasperation or surprise, at least that's how I heard it most growing up.

We rounded out the evening watching the Twins game, and then went to the movie, "The Happening".  I used to be a big fan of director M. Night Shyamalan, after seeing his films like, "The Sixth Sense".  The reviews weren't very good for his latest movie, but I was still curious to see it.  In the end, the story wasn't that great, but I should say that there were still several moments when I had my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears. It was scary to me, but Thom would argue that I'm a big wimp.

Sunday was a little more laid-back and I got some baking and cooking done.  In the evening, Thom and I went to Falls Park for a picnic. It was a beautiful night, and many others were out enjoying it as well.  We played frisbee and walked around the park until it was almost dark.  Sometimes there are weekends when you try to do too much, and the days fly by. Other times, you can do too little and then the time off just seems wasted.  I think we found a nice balance this weekend.  It was a great way to kick off the official start of summer.
