Thinking About Painting By Number

By Leslie Rupiper

While I was vacationing in Colorado, one of the days we were at the cabin, it happened to be pretty windy.  Rather than go out and try to convince fish to jump on the hook, we spent the day inside...enjoying the view.  I also decided it might be a good excuse to shop, so I wandered down to Red Feather Lakes' General Store.  Inside I spotted a Paint By Number kit.  I hadn't seen one of those in years.  But just a few weeks before, I had seen an article in a magazine where this young couple had gone out and found all of the paint-by-number paintings and decorated an area of their home with them.  As odd as it might sound, it was actually kind of cute. (Don't worry, Thom, I don't plan to decorate our new home with paint-by-number pictures.)  But I will tell you, it took all of my strength not to buy that paint-by-number kit in Colorado.  The only thing that kept me from getting it, was that I didn't want to stay inside painting the whole time, when beautiful Colorado was waiting for me outside.

I've never been very good at drawing or painting. I preferred writing. My brother, on the other hand, was a great drawer. It's probably a good thing he went on to work in architecture, while I chose the news route.  But I do remember, when we were kids, we had both paint-by-number kits. I don't remember how mine turned out, but I'm betting Craig's was better.  Now that I'm older, maybe I'm a better painter.  Who knows?  For my birthday, Thom's sister gave me a gift card to one of the local craft stores.  This weekend, I might just see if there's a paint-by-number kit with my name on it.  Some might argue that I have my hands full with scrapbooking, and that I don't need another craft. To them I would simply say, "Don't worry.  It'll probably be a short-lived venture, once I recall just how good at painting I really am not."
