Was It The Tomato?

By Leslie Rupiper

It sure seems like a lot of people have had the stomach flu lately.  As I mentioned, I came down with something last week.  Then my dad and brother also got sick.  We hadn't hung out together at all, so I highly doubt we spread it over the phone.  Nancy Naeve Brown covers "What's Going Around" every week, and this week...it was the stomach flu.  Sometimes Nancy and I like to talk as if  we're doctors, even though we couldn't be farther from it.  Our conversations go something like this:

Leslie: "It sure seems weird that so many people are sick with the same type of thing."

Nancy: "I know.  Gastroenteritis is what everybody seems to have right now."

Leslie: "Do you think there's something more to it? What if we're all actually getting sick from tainted tomatoes, peppers or something they haven't even identified yet?"

Nancy: "It's possible. Scientists don't even know what's causing the Salmonella outbreak yet.  More than 1,000 people are confirmed sick, and those are only the people who go to the hospital."

Leslie: "We could all be contaminated, and we don't even know it."

And so it goes.  I suppose this is how conspiracy theories are born.  I'm not pointing any fingers or blaming the poor tomato growers. They've taken enough heat already. All I'm saying is that until somebody tells me definitively what's going on with all of these Salmonella cases, no one's going to tell me it's not possible I had something more than the stomach flu.  I suppose it's important to mention that I lean toward Hypochondria when it comes to my illnesses. But what if...just this one time...I'm actually right?

Here's wishing you a fun and healthy weekend...tomatoes or not.
