Time For School Supplies

By Leslie Rupiper

I was one of those kids who actually looked forward to school starting in the fall.  I think it was because I knew I'd get to pick out new school supplies.  When I was really young, this included a new pencil box, or pencil case, new crayons, a book bag, etc. As I got older , Trapper Keepers (yes, I'm that old) and backpacks were what piqued my interest. Lately, store fliers have been coming out promoting the newest school supplies.  When I see them, I wish I could go and stock up on all new items: pens, pencils, notebooks, folders.  I suppose I would be hard-pressed to find uses for them here at KSFY.  But it would still be fun to shop for them.

Every year, The Banquet holds its Supply One Student event. It provides backpacks full of school supplies for area kids in need.  Right now, the collection boxes are waiting to be filled in several major stores.  For me, this has been a perfect way to have a little fun buying school supplies, while getting them to kids who could really get some use out of them. It's on my To Do List for the weekend. While it's something I really like to do, I have to admit, I can't wait until I have a little boy or girl of my own to help pick out supplies. If only they made Trapper Keepers like they used to.
