This week marks the last full week of the Summer of 2008, and while I'm sorry to see it go, I have to admit, I'm a little excited for autumn to officially begin. I've always really liked the cooler temperatures, the changing leaves, and of course, Halloween. But this week, I've found most people I work with, do not share this opinion. Take, for example, my co-anchor Brian Allen. He's almost depressed about the fact that summer is almost over. During each newscast, when Phil talks about how nice our weather will be this week, Brian just gets sadder that according to the calendar, Autumn really begins on Monday.
When I was little, I remember Mom canning a lot of fruits and vegetables during the summer. We would pack the jars away, and she would always say, "We'll eat those when the snow flies". It created such a neat image in my mind, that even though I wasn't all that excited to eat the canned corn, I was thrilled to think about the fact that snow would soon be coming. Maybe that's why I still like autumn these days. I see it as a time to be thankful, a time to reap what is hopefully a bountiful harvest for our area growers, and to settle in for the cooler, calmer days of autumn.
Brian says the reason he doesn't like the fall is because it's a sign that colder weather is on the way. I suppose that's a good point. But I'm actually looking forward to "when the snow flies" and will be enjoying each autumn day until that happens.
