My best friend Jenni, recently became an aunt for the first time.  Since my niece was born 2 years ago, I have been telling her how neat it would be.  Now, she's experiencing it for herself. Since neither Jenni, nor myself have babies of our own yet, this is almost as close as it gets. She tells me how emotional it is to see her sister and brother-in-law with the baby and how special it is to hold the baby girl herself.

I remember when my niece was born, I instantly felt more attached to her than any other baby. There's just something about seeing your own family's genetics come shining through this new little child. I remember when she cried, I felt like crying too. This was a lot different than feeling close to the kids I'd cared for as a baby-sitter. This was family.

Jenni has said how difficult it is for her to pass up clothes and other items for her niece when she sees them in stores.  I told her holidays take on a whole new meaning when you're buying for a little one. I'm sure her niece was decked out perfectly for St. Patrick's Day, and there will be more cute outfits to come for Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July...you name it!

So, welcome to the club, Jenni. There's nothing quite like being an auntie and showering that little niece of yours with all kinds of love. I know it's a role you'll fulfill, perfectly!
