Red Light Runners

By Phil Schreck

It happened again today. I'm sitting at a traffic light and as my signal changes to green, someone zips through the intersection from the adjacent direction right through a red light. This wasn't a case where their light was yellow when they entered the intersection. Oh no, it was a good two seconds after the light changed to red. Thankfully, I saw what this guy was going to do since I just happened to be looking in that direction. By the car's speed, I could tell that the driver had no intention of stopping. If I had gone ahead when my light changed to green, there would have been problems.

The thing is, this is not the first time I've seen this. Not by far. As a matter of fact, I see this at least once a day on my way to taking kids to school, driving to the gym or heading in to work. It's a wonder more people aren't killed in this city because of it.

UPDATE:
It happened again tonight! On my way back to work after my dinner break. Once again, I could tell this person had no thought of stopping. I counted a good three seconds from the time the light turned red to the time the vehicle made it to the intersection.

My son is just about old enough to drive. I'm already telling him that even if you're the best driver in the world, you always have to look out for the other guy and drive defensively because not everyone follows the rules.

I absolutely agree with you. Even smaller cities have major problems with red lights, so I can only imagine what the bigger cities are like. I really think communities should consider installing many more cameras for the red lights. I have a feeling fewer people would run red lights if they knew the cameras were installed, and even if they did run the red lights then they would get caught if the cameras were installed.

It's getting to be the norm. I think it is a combination of not having "Driver's Ed" required and provided in school and a general attitude of "rude in-your-face behavior" on and off the road. Defensive driving has never been more necessary.

I couldn't agree with you more...it's horrible and seems to be getting worse. I seem to be using the horn on my car more often :) I wouldn't mind seeing more red light cameras in the city, like the one at 10th & Minnesota.
