Dog Days Are Almost Here

By Phil Schreck

We're about to enter the "dog days" of summer. It's officially the period from July 3 through August 11. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this time is named for the Dog Star, Sirius, which is visible with the rising sun this time of the year. Our ancestors associated this sky configuration with the usually hot weather that happened at the same time. Sirius can be identified as the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major which means "greater dog".
