When The Corn Stalks Turn Brown, Farmers See Green And I Get A Little Blue

By Phil Schreck

While driving to and from Kansas City this weekend, I noticed most of the corn fields turning from green to brown. I'm sure this gets farmers fired up to get out in the fields before too long to bring in this year's harvest and cash in on a bin-busting bounty.

But as for me...I start to get a little down. Why? It seems just a little while ago that everything was just starting to turn green and those tiny little corn plants were just poking up through the ground. Just where did the spring and summer go?

Now I'm starting to think about scraping frost off the windshield, pulling the cold weather gear out of the basement and getting the snow blower tuned up.

But here's some good news...the latest seasonal outlook for the months of November, December and January is indicating above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation.

No, but I have been compared to Jack Kennedy! (For those of you who may not get it, this refers back to the Vice Presidential debate in 1988 betweem Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle).

I have to admit I get a bit blue as well when the corn shrivels and turns brown and leaves all fall. I love autumn, just hate winter, and it makes me sad to know it's on the way! Glad to hear about the above normal temps, though!
