I've posted before about the ability of my 3 year-old daughter to keep secrets. Click here to read that one. If you don't have the time, the short story is that before Mother's Day this year, she spilled the beans to my wife about the gifts we bought for her.

But she's gotten better at sealing the lips. My wife told her, "Now Ellie, what do you say if Daddy asks, 'What did you get me for Father's Day?" To that they practiced her reply of, "No, no Daddy, you have to wait!"

So as soon as they got back from the store I asked her what she got me. She thought for a minute, then put up her little pointer finger waving it back and forth saying, "I can't tell you...No, no Daddy, you have to wait...until Monday." "But Father's Day is Sunday," I told her. "No Daddy, you have to wait 'til Monday." You can't argue with a 3 year-old.

So I had to wait, and it was worth it, sort of. I opened the bag and there was a coffee mug that said, "Geek" on it. It had blue stripes on the mug, and she says, "Look Daddy, it's blue. You like blue 'cause you're a boy..." Well that makes sense. My wife says that's the one she wanted to get, and there was no talking her out of it.

She can't read yet, and I don't know if she quite knows what a "Geek" is just yet. But I'm guessing that mug will fit her thoughts of me in roughly 12 years or so. I'm sure at 15 I will be a geek to her, even though I already am a geek to everyone else....
