My First Pheasant Hunt

Tools

By Sports KSFY

I know it may be a little embarassing, I'm a sports anchor in South Dakota, and I had never gone pheasant hunting until the past weekend. Pheasant hunting is part of the culture of generations in this state. And I had never taken part.

A neighbor and good friend of mine has in-laws who live on a farm near Fedora. We had talked about doing this for the past couple of years, but for whatever reason, we never got around too it. Too busy I guess.

But this year, the hunt would be on. Another friend, who is an avid hunter, would also join us. My neighbors in-laws would also hunt with us, and serve as the guides to their amazing terrain.

I tell you what, even though I couldn't hit a bloated cow from ten feel away, with my novice shooting ability, I had a blast.

It's an adrenaline rush when those birds get kicked up, and you see it's a rooster. The experienced hunters in our group were quick on the draw. While I, preferred to aim, and then shoot, when the pheasant was usually out of range.

One ringneck fell, when both me and the avid hunter, shot at the same time. I'll take the credit, my bird.

It was an incredible day on the South Dakota prairie, where we saw jackrabbits, deer, coyotes, and plenty of pheasants.

And fortunately, no one got hurt.

It was fun cooking(or watching my wife cook) something that (maybe) I had killed.

Even though, I need to get in better shape. We walked a long ways in five-plus hours of hunting. I would definitely go again.
