Kayleigh Schmidt joined KSFY News in October of 2016 as the bureau reporter in Aberdeen, SD.
Born in Willmar, MN, Kayleigh had the opportunity to travel the country and overseas when her mother joined the Air Force. As a young girl, Kayleigh was constantly watching the news with family members and wanted to be a meteorologist. She moved to Rapid City, SD in 2006 and stayed there after her mother retired. She attended New Underwood High School for three years and moved to Stevens High School for her senior year. Following high school graduation, she attended South Dakota State University for her entire college career.
At SDSU, Kayleigh didn't major in broadcast journalism until the end of her sophomore year. For one semester, she took part in producing, anchoring, and reporting for the Jacks Weekly Report. Although KSFY is her first reporting job, she had the chance to intern with the television station in the spring of 2016 and is ecstatic to be back with the team.
Kayleigh has been figure skating since she was 2 years old, but also played hockey on and off during that time. She ventured into other sports during high school but the ice continued to keep her interest the most. The Washington Capitals, Minnesota Wild, Twins and Vikings tend to keep Kayleigh's attention year round, but she enjoys finding that perfect concert or hiking trail no matter the distance.
If you think of a story that needs to be reported in Aberdeen or the surrounding areas, email Kayleigh and she'll work to make it happen!
