Next month the Enhanced Nursing Licensure Compact (ENLC) will go into effect in South Dakota, Iowa and 24 other states.
The ENLC will allow nurses to provide care in other states without the need for additional licenses.
"It's very similar to the drivers license where you get one where you reside and you can use that license to drive in any other state that is part of the drivers license compact, and you have a privilege to do that, and so this compact is very similar to that," South Dakota Board of Nursing Executive Director Gloria Damgaard said.
South Dakota has been part of the compact since 2001.
This new compact requires criminal background checks for all applicants.
There are currently 26 states in the compact and two more expected to join next month.
