One dead in house fire in northwest Iowa

George, IA One person was killed in a house fire in George, Iowa early Sunday.

According to KIWA Radio in Lyon County, Iowa, the fire was reported shortly after midnight Sunday. George Fire Chief Bill Sprock tells KIWA that firefighters and trucks from eight surrounding communities helped battle the blaze through the night.

Chief Sprock says fire crews were dealing with below zero temperatures and freezing water. He says fire crews spent seven hours on scene, using roughly 50,000 gallons of water to extinguish the house fire on South Sydney Street.

The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.

Firefighters from George, Boyden, Little Rock, Rock Rapids, Doon, Matlock, Sheldon and Sibley all assisted in fighting this fire.
