First babies of 2018 born at Sanford, Avera

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Just 23 minutes into the new year, Sioux Falls welcomed its first new resident of 2018.

Jeremiah Rogers was the first baby delivered Monday morning at Sanford Health.

Jeremiah Rogers was the first baby delivered Monday morning at Sanford Health.

His parents, Stephanie and Nick, arrived at Sanford at 9:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

With the aid of her midwife, Sanford nurses and a birthing tub, Stephanie gave birth at 12:23 a.m.

Jeremiah joins two brothers, Malcolm and Tobias, in the Rogers family.

"There's been unique things about the other boys' birth, so I guess this is his thing," Stephanie said. "It was just meant to be, I guess. He was due on Christmas Eve. He was determined to come on New Year's Day."

Jeremiah weighed in at nine pounds and 13 ounces, and both mother and baby are doing very well.

Not long after, Avera Health delivered some newborns of their own.

Alexander Ryan Sturzenbecher was born at 6:35 a.m. Monday morning.

Alexander came a little early, as he was not due until January 14. He is David and Olga's first child.

Alex was not quite the first Avera birth, though. Another baby boy was born just before 3 a.m., but the family asked for privacy about the details.
