SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Gov. Daugaard has proclaimed April 20 as Safe Driving Day in the state.
It is the first time such a proclamation has been declared in South Dakota.
Troopers say the timing of the day is fitting.
"Weather's nice, people are in a hurry to get where they're going, people are gonna start camping, vacationing, it's a good time now to get back into those habits of paying attention to everyone else, especially with the construction zones coming up. We're gonna have some more construction throughout the summer," Trooper Matt Wosje said.
The state has been making progress on driving safer.
Last year saw the second lowest number of fatal crashes ever.
And so far in 2017, the number of deaths from crashes is down 48 percent.
