Hundreds of students attend 'Women in Science' convention

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Hundreds of 8th grade girls and their teachers gathered at Southeast Tech for a "Women in Science" event on Wednesday.

Dozens of women who work in science-related fields were on hand to present technical career paths.

The "Women in Science" convention is designed to shine a positive light on STEM careers and inspire the young women who are at the event.

"I like the atmosphere because everybody is interested in it, everybody likes the different events and everyone is really nice," student Rowan Kocmick said. "I really like the medical booths because that's a future career I'd like to go into."

"It's a great way, an efficient way for students to learn about a lot of the growing and changing careers in South Dakota," Teachwell Solutions college and career readiness coordinator Kristy Jackson said. "We've actually been doing this long enough now that we have some women who attended the event as 8th graders and now they are here as some of our presenters and teachers, and that's nice to see too."

Some of the presenters at the event included local doctors, vets, pharmacists, engineers and computer analysts.
