HURON, S.D. (KSFY) - Police in Huron say they were involved in a long standoff earlier this week.

The standoff started around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at a residence on the 600 block of Idaho Avenue SE. According to Detective Casey Spinsby, police received a report that a man with mental health issues attacked another man, and was making threats toward both the victim and police.

The victim was able to make it out of the house. Officers at the scene learned the suspect was heavily armed, with access to several handguns and rifles, and might be suicidal. Based off that information, police decided to wait to enter the home.

Later that afternoon, officers slowly entered the home. They found the body of the suspect in the residence. Spinsby said he died of of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Huron Police Department issued a statement saying it appreciates the cooperation of people in the neighborhood during the incident.
