Sioux Falls, SD “The signs are up and I think people are definitely getting ready to shop.”
The recent addition of new signs at the Shops at Lake Lorraine has many people anxious to see when they'll be able to start shopping at these new Sioux Falls retailers.
With major retailers like Marshall, HomeGoods, Ross Dress for Less, Carters/Oshkosh and DSW--all brand new to the Sioux Falls area--there is a lot of excitement for these stores to open.
On Thursday, Ross announced its grand opening will be October 7th. All of the other retailers are also expected to be open in time for the holiday shopping season.
"Look for them to open yet this year,” Jodi Schwan with SiouxFalls.business said.
All except DSW have plans to open in 2017, including Hobby Lobby's relocation from 41st street.
“It is exciting to see all of these new shops coming to Sioux Falls,” Sioux Falls Development Foundation’s Vice President of Workforce Development Lon Clemensen said.
But with that excitement comes the logistics of opening six new major retail stores.
“Marshalls has started to hire managers, from there, there will be more of a broad hiring push, so there are some clear signs that they are getting ready to open,” Schwan said.
The hiring push for these new retailers is coming at the same time Sioux Falls is already seeing extremely low unemployment rates, especially in retail.
“There's going to be a lot of opportunities for people but it’s also going to make the market that much tighter,” Schwan said.
“In the short term it could cause some pressure on labor and it may have an impact on wages and some increases may have to take place across the city,” Clemensen said.
As retailers compete for employees, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation believes wages will also become more competitive.
“It’s all about the whole salary and benefits package but it’s also about what kind of environment people are working in in these shops and retail outlets,” Clemensen said.
“We have such low unemployment in this city, particularly in the retail sector, I think you're going to see the employers competing for the workers, just as much as you're going to see people competing to get those new jobs,” Schwan said.
Both Ross and Marshalls are already hiring store managers. Schwan says people looking for a retail job, even part time or over the holidays, should expect to start hearing from these new Lake Lorraine retailers over the next two months.
If you're more excited to shop at these stores than work there, here's a look at the likely timeline.
The property managers say Hobby Lobby is planning for an October 2nd grand opening.
Ross just announced on the Lake Lorraine Facebook page that its grand opening is scheduled for October 7th.
Marshalls and HomeGoods are both expected to open in October as well, although no official dates have been released.
Carters/Oshkosh is expected to open in time for the holiday shopping season.
DSW will be opening early next year.
A 7th yet-to-be announced national retailer is also expected to open a new Lake Lorraine location in the coming months.
