Loose moose causes traffic concerns near Brandon Thursday morning

BRANDON, S.D. (KSFY) A moose was discovered wandering near an interstate exit between Brandon and Corson Thursday morning.

Emmett Keyser, regional supervisor for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, said his office received a call around 7:40 a.m. from an officer who lives in Brandon about the moose walking near Interstate 90.

He said the officers' first concern was keeping the moose out of commuter traffic.

Officers attempted to tranquilize the animal, but failed twice because they couldn't get close enough, and it began heading north.

Keyser said the moose had traveled from Madison, Chester and Renner before making its way to Brandon.

A few hours later, officers were able to get close enough to the moose to tranquilize it, and a vet from the Great Plains Zoo checked the animal to make sure she wasn't sick.

The moose passed her medical exam and has been released away from the interstate.

Keyser said he appreciated local law enforcement's help in keeping drivers safe.
