Man facing felony charge after allegedly breaking downtown sculpture

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - A Sioux Falls man is facing a felony vandalism charge after police say he broke a downtown sculpture.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said an off-duty officer saw the man climb onto the "Salmon Runner" sculpture, which depicts a bear holding a salmon in its mouth, at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue Saturday at 2 a.m. and called police.

A piece of the sculpture broke off the side during the incident, Clemens said.

Officers arrested 24-year-old Casey John Schmidt for intentional damage to property.

The damage done to the sculpture is unknown at this time, but Clemens said it is worth $16,000.
