UPDATE: 1 person has died, 3 injured in multi-vehicle crash west of Sioux Falls

State and county authorities are investigating a fatal crash involving three vehicles west of Sioux Falls, Thursday night.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, one person has died and another has serious, life-threatening injuries. Two have minor injuries. The three surviving victims were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol confirms with KSFY it happened along Highway 42 seven miles south of Humboldt. Troopers and deputies from Minnehaha County were called to the area around 5:30 p.m. for a serious injury crash report.

A KSFY photojournalist on the scene said the highway was shut down in both directions for a few miles.
