Rep. Noem holds discussion in Sioux Falls on violent crime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Rep. Kristi Noem was in Sioux Falls Monday to talk about crime.

Business and community leaders gathered at Sioux Falls Design Center to discuss their experiences and views on the crime rate in Sioux Falls and across the state as a whole.

Noem said violent crime rates in South Dakota are on the rise and steps need to be taken to reverse that trend.

"This is an issue that we need to deal with and be much more proactive on the awareness and and prevention side rather than just reacting to it when someone commits a crime," she said.

While the overall crime rate in Sioux Falls decreased slightly in 2017, homicides are on the rise.

Violent crime in South Dakota has nearly doubled over the last decade.
