A new report says South Dakota residents leave a lot of unused vacation time on the table.
According to Project: Time Off, 73 percent of South Dakotans left vacation days go to waste in 2016. That ranks South Dakota 4th in the nation when it comes to unused vacation, behind Idaho, New Hampshire, and Alaska.
Project: Time Off is a partner with AAA. The goal of the study is to encourage more Americans to use vacation time, and to show the economic downside of not using vacation days.
Researchers say in South Dakota alone, the lost direct spending potential from those unused vacation days is $404 million. Nationwide, if Americans used all their vacation time, it would generate $128 billion in direct spending, with an even larger overall economic impact.
