SIOUX FALLS, SD (KSFY) - Police officers and firefighters typically get along. But they also get competitive for a good cause.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue posted a video on their Facebook page this week to get the word out about the annual Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive.
The video features members of Sioux Falls Fire Rescue walking into a donut shop. But all they find are empty cases and four members of the Sioux Falls Police Department eating donuts. That leads to several glares at each other, and one firefighter raising his trusty axe.
For 22 years, the two departments have battled it out in a friendly competition to encourage everyone to donate blood. The Community Blood Bank says the competition ensures the community has the blood supply needed to treat patients during the holidays.
The public is encouraged to walk into either Sanford Medical Center or Avera McKennan Hospital donor rooms and designate their blood donation to the department of their choice. Donors can choose a specially designed "police" or "fire" t-shirt for donating blood at the donor rooms (while supplies last) and a $5.00 certificate at Texas Roadhouse.
The competition begins Tuesday December 26 and runs through January 5.
