Sioux Falls woman makes mittens out of thrift store sweaters

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Kathy Jacobsen started making mittens out of thrift store sweaters about five years ago.

"I just started with something to do, but then I got a little crazy," she said.

Kathy says she loves searching second-hand stores for sweaters. She uses 100 percent wool, but cashmere is her favorite. Inside the mittens she uses new fleece. The buttons on the mittens are also recycled.

She says selling the mittens is just a perk, making them is her favorite part.

"I've sold about 2,000 pair in the last 5 years. That's not too many," she said.

"I give a lot of them away. I think that's a good thing," she said.
