SiouxFalls.Business Report: May 15, 2018

SIOUXFALLS, S.D. (SIOUXFALLS.BUSINESS) - Jodi Schwan with SiouxFalls.Business stopped by the KSFY Studio to discuss the latest business news:

Visitor numbers are in need of a rebound after a slow start to the year.

In the first quarter, the City's lodging tax dropped 14 percent – we think on a combination of weather and conservative spending because of the ag market.

Other cities near us including Fargo and Omaha saw even lower occupancy.

Pheasant Fest is a good example of what's happening – while 28,000 people attended, many drove hours each way for multiple days instead of staying overnight.

Things are looking promising as we head toward nicer weather though. Requests for visitor guides are up and attractions like SculptureWalk, new downtown businesses and the Great Plains Zoo do a good job of helping with visitor traffic.

Filly Flair Boutique is growing.

It's a great local success story started in the founder's basement, and it's become one of the leading online boutiques worldwide, with 1 million Facebook followers and counting.

To support all that ecommerce, the business is building a new 20,000 square foot warehouse in Baltic. It will open later this summer.

There is now a team of 20 employees, including paid models and photographers, plus of course digital marketers, including some whose job it is to post all day on Instagram and Snapchat.
