Special Olympics athletes compete in track, field events at Howard Wood

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Hundreds of Special Olympics athletes gathered at Howard Wood Field Saturday for the annual Southeast Area Spring Games.

The spring games gave athletes a chance to compete in several classic track and field events, but for many it was all about getting out and being active.

"I am a good athlete and I love Special Olympics. I have been there a long time," Kelly Janssen said.

"It's like one big happy family," Ian Madsen said. "You are never too old to run."

The Special Olympics will be hosting several other competitions over the next few months.

Next weekend, the spring aquatics competitions will be held at the Midco Aquatic Center.
