Summit League has new app focused on fan experience for tournament weekend

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - The Summit League tournament has a new smartphone app that's focused on enhancing the fan experience throughout the weekend.

The Summit League has had an app for the last three years, but decided it needed a refresh.

"The notifications are a little more proactive we can provide a little bit more connection between our sponsors and the fans," said Bryan Miller, Executive Director for Sioux Falls Sports Authority.

The app, which is free in the app store, is just called "The Summit League." The league itself has a separate app.

Miller said organizers worked with the company From Now On, based in Omaha, Neb. to design the app. He said the developers have worked on several teams' apps that compete in the league. And this new app is all about the fans.

"It kind of gives the fans the first chance to get to know about what is going and then others will hear about it as we go," Miller said.

The app features team rosters and will have live game stats available once the action gets underway on Saturday. It also has in-depth information about each of the players and has the ability for users to sign up for push notifications for the men's and women's games so they'll never miss a highlight or a score. But that's not all ...

"FanFest it will be used for quite a bit," Miller said. "Between the pep rallies and any giveaways that we're going to do down there that are unique."

It's the Summit League tournament's second year hosting FanFest just next door in the Sioux Falls arena. This year fans will be able to leave games, go to FanFest and then return to the game even though their ticket has already been scanned.

Miller said they will continually make improvements each year to both the tournament and its new app.

"Maybe next year it's something different," Miller said. 'We'll always have an app of course, but maybe it's another feature that people will enjoy. We don't want things to get stale with the tournament and so this is one way to help that."

The app also features offers from nearby businesses who will have special discounts for fans throughout the weekend. It also has a concessions tab where fans can see the offerings at the concession stands nearby throughout the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Other features include a tab to view merchandise that's available and the schedule, as well as an interactive map of the Premier Center, FanFest booths at the Sioux Falls Arena and a map of surrounding businesses who are helping to sponsor the weekend's events.

If you want to download the app, go to the App Store on your phone, type in "The Summit League" and download the app, then set up your preferences for push notifications.
