KSFY's Scholar of the Week is Mariah Volesky, a senior at Webster Area High School.
Mariah runs cross country, track, plays basketball and is a member of the Student Council, Key Club, and the school's new robotics team... just to name a few. With a GPA well over 4.0, this is just the beginning of Mariah's life-long success.
When we asked third grade teacher and Webster basketball coach Jared Vergeldt about senior Mariah Volesky, this is what he said:
"She's an exemplary student and athlete. She's a multi-sport athlete and carrying a GPA of over 4.0. To do that shows She's got nothing but commitment, dedication, hard work," Teacher and Coach Jared Vergeldt said.
Mariah says it's her family that has influenced her to do so well.
"My mom has always pushed academics. That's one thing she's always stressed growing up. I've always had really great teachers," Senior Mariah Volesky said.
On top of everything she's doing, Mariah joined the South Dakota National Guard and completed 11 weeks of basic training over the summer. In fact, she's planning on ROTC and pre-med at USD next fall.
"I want to go onto Officer school with ROTC and pre-med has always been my plan since I was a little kid. I've always wanted to be a doctor," Mariah said.
"She's well-liked by students, a great personality and her hard work and dedication sets her a part from others, wonderful student," Vergeldt said.
Teaches say from the very beginning as a young girl, Mariah has been a great student and person to have around.
"We don't want her to leave. We talk about her and say she'll be good at anything she does. Whichever path she chooses, she'll be good at it," Vergeldt. said.
For being named a KSFY Scholar of the Week, Mariah received a $100 scholarship from Lake Region Electric Association which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
