Tonight's Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Matthew Eigenberg, a senior at Brandon Valley High School with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Matthew plays Football and wrestles. He is also very active with his church group as well as being a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Matthew Eigenberg tells us he considers it a real honor to be named a Scholar of the Week. "It means a lot because it means that somebody took the time to appreciate me and all the work I've done in my school years here so it means a lot."
Matthew tells us that he has been lucky in that he has been able to easily grasp the concepts of most of the classes he has taken through the years at Brandon Valley. But he does admit there is one class that he does find frustrating; "Math is weird. You either get it or you don't and sometimes you go into the test and it just all comes to you like the knowledge is there."
His motivation during his entire school career to this point has been to do well and to earn good grades.
But as he has gone through his high school career that motivation has also turned to doing well in order to earn scholarships that will help pay for his education. "I knew that in order for me to get the scholarship that I have now...I have the Navy ROTC scholarship and in order for me to get that I had to get the 4.0 . I had to do good on my ACT and that was my motivation was if I want my school to be paid for I have to work hard now."
"He has been thinking about his future earlier than most of his classmates." School counselor Michelle Stemwedel says Matthew is successful because of his work ethic but also because of who he is as a person. "There's a lot of students that will pitch in but he's one that will pitch in before he is asked. He notices what people need. He notices what will make people have a better day. He's very good at that."
So what comes next for Matthew after high school? "I'll be going to Iowa State University in Ames for Mechanical Engineering and I will also be partaking in the Navy ROTC program as well."
For being named our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week, Matthew received a $100 scholarship from Sioux Valley Energy which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
