What's driving the increased attendance at the Sioux Empire Fair?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Summer events in Sioux Falls are drawing huge crowds and the Sioux Empire Fair is no exception.
In fact, fair officials say attendance is up from this time last year.

This is the second year Shirley Martell's family has had a stand at the fair and she says her monkey balls are selling like hot cakes.

"We sold about 6,000 last year. We've already sold about 5,000. So, we expect to exceed that amount," Martell said.

And she isn't the only vender who says sales are up.

"I would say we're up 15% I'm guessing," Owner of Marc O's Concessions, Mark Moore said.

He has had a booth at the fair for more than 15 years.

"I think the attendance this year is absolutely great," he said.

What's causing the increase in attendance? Entertainment.

"It's much busier, much busier. I think part of it is the entertainment has been great. Monday and Tuesday there were big crowds," Martell said.

Gabriel Iglesias took to Twitter to say his Tuesday night show had record breaking attendance.
Fair officials say it was the highest attended day this year.

"That was unbelievable attendance, that was probably the third largest crowd I've ever seen out here," Moore said.

Another factor driving attendance is the weather.

"I mean the weather has been unbelievable and some people come out during the day when it's not 100 degrees in years past so it's great," Moore said.

"And of course the weather had a lot to do with it because it hasn't been so beastly hot. It's been pretty nice weather," Martell said.

She says even though the fair is a wild ride she plans on coming out again next year.

"We intend to. We have this spot, and you kind of get the same spot, so, yeah we intend to keep on doing that," Martell said.

The entertainment will continue through the weekend with the PRCA rodeo.
