2 cups self-rising flour, plus more for rolling out
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
2/3 cup buttermilk
Directions1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.
2.In a large bowl, combine flour, cheese, sugar, salt, and cayenne pepper, if desired; mix well. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut shortening into flour mixture until crumbly. Add buttermilk and stir until a dough forms.
3.Sprinkle flour on a board; knead dough until smooth. Roll out dough with a rolling pin to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch heart-shaped biscuits. Place on baking sheet.
4.Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until light golden. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
