The year was 2006. Stickney/Mount Vernon's Jake Steffen was one of the six kids on the cover of the Pigskin Preview.
"It was always kind of a prestigious thing being on the KSFY Pigskin Preview cover. Everybody got that magazine, it was very well known throughout the whole state to be on that was a really cool thing as a high school kid." says Jake.
Jake was one of the state's more highly recruited players that fall. The quarterback and linebacker was coming off leading the Knights to the Class 9AA state title game as a junior.
"Things have changed quite a bit, I dont even think its Stickney/ Mount Vernon anymore. It's Plankinton/Mount Vernon but it was definitely a fun thing. The Friday nights, the bus rides, and all those different things." says Jake.
He would go on to play college football at South Dakota State where he played defensive end.
"Played defensive end for four years, started my last three, great experience, phenomenal program, nothing but good things to say about coach Stig and the program he runs there." says Steffen.
These days, Jake works for Profile by Sanford in Sioux Falls. where he travels around the region. setting up their system
"I finished at SDSU with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. From that point I kinda wanted to get in that strength and conditioning role in college coaching. Started about a year and a half ago, and our role as operations specialists is we travel and support 25 locations across the country we spend time with the managers the employees the coaches kinda getting them up to speed on all there is with Profile." says Jake.
Jake was the second in his family to get on the cover. His brother Mike was on the 2004 Pigskin Preview.
"We still have the Pigskin Previews framed in the house, both covers right there." says Jake.
