Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign set up an office in Sioux Falls today. That means both democratic presidential candidates have a presence in the city, and they're both gearing up for a major fight in the South Dakota primary on June 3rd. Now that Hillary Clinton's Sioux falls campaign office is open, supporters say they're ready to get to work. "South Dakotans For Hillary" Director, Geoff Wetrosky says, "We actually had Chelsea Clinton call in and kick off the campaign here in South Dakota. It's going to be an exciting 29 days."
Barack Obama's Sioux Falls campaign office opened last month and in that time, volunteers have been handing out literature and talking to South Dakotans. They say in that time, they've gotten the endorsements of 21 county democratic chairs. Obama South Dakota Campaign Director, Nathan Peterson says, "People have been very energized and enthused that the campaign's coming to South Dakota and ready to kind of dig in and help us with the work we need to get done over the next 4 weeks."
But first, both candidates are focusing on major primaries in North Carolina and Indiana on Tuesday. Hillary Clinton put out a new TV ad in both states saying Obama is attacking her plan because, "he doesn't have one". Barack Obama focused on job losses, falling home values and soaring energy costs.
Back here in Sioux Falls, both camps are gearing up for the most significant South Dakota primary in years. Wetrosky says, "We're here from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. or later every night, 7 days a week. Time is a finite resource and we're trying to take advantage of every single minute we've got." Peterson says, "We started out with a very aggressive effort. We're going to continue that . We're certainly not taking anything for granted."
Both the Clinton and Obama campaign offices say they'll host result "watch parties" tomorrow night as numbers come in from Indiana and North Carolina.
