County Treasurer Tells Commissioners, "You're Clueless"

By Robert Wilson

Heated words at the Minnehaha County Commission meeting Tuesday. The arguments come over the state's controversial new license plate renewal program...

As people continue to wait in long lines on the first floor, the real fireworks were upstairs where Minnehaha County Treasurer Pam Nelson faced off with county commissioners this morning.

Treasurer Pam Nelson told commissioners, "you all seem to be an expert on running that office. But frankly, you know you're clueless. You have no concept of what it takes to make that operation work."

Commissioner Anne Hajek shot back, "so as we sit here asking you to accept additional help from the state, you have said no, we have asked you to open all the windows, you have said no, and somebody's going to go down and let them know that the buck stops with you Pam."

Commissioners urged Pam Nelson to do something more. Commissioner Jeff Barth chimed in. "I would hope that your staff would do everything that it can, and you would do everything that you can to get service. So turning down offers of help, even if it's not what exactly how you want it, I don't see how that works towards getting us service."

Nelson rejected a state offer to bring in a worker who would staff an express line. She says it wouldn't be fair to others in line.

Nelson asked commissioners, "do you want to understand this or do you just want to tell me what to do when you don't run my office?"
Commissioner Carol Twedt responded, "I've heard this before. You run your office and I run this meeting. And you have one more minute and then we're done with this conversation."
Nelson then said, "well, if you want to know what it's going to take to run things better, we're going to need more people."

Commissioner Hajek says she thinks this is a publicity ploy on Treasurer Nelson's part because she doesn't like the new system. Nelson says to cut wait times she's going to need as many as 9 new full time employees.

Pam is right, Anne Hajek has NO clue how this works. More open windows and longer hours are not the answer. This is a great idea that was not ready to be implemented, yet Pam Nelson was forced to take it to the public and is now being made the fall guy, so to speak. This whole idea is fantastic, but obviously those writing the code were not given enough time to properly complete it. Take the system off line, go back to the way it was, hire a project manager to make sure it is done and COMPLETE.

Don't blame Pam. She had a budget to follow and was not allowed more staff. The new system is slow and cumberson, and not totallt perfected. Take it off to let the office get caught up. When it is perfected, put it on next year. More staff was needed before this went into effect. The problem lies in the high volume of work to be done and not enough workers.

Personally i have stood in line and got to see this "system" it is pull down boxes?? what is so hard about this?? Could it be we as a county need to hire people who can run a computer?? Its not that difficult!! When i was there, there was a man doing 3-4 for every 1 person the older ladies were doing...so if this is a "system" problem how can this guy be working circles around these ladies??

I was in line when Anne Hajek was making a spectical of herself. There were some raised eyebrows after her loud, scary, crazy scene..along with some laughter. Please don't scare the people waiting in line anymore, and keep her far away. One simple word explains her actions..wacky!

Did someone just tell Pam Nelson this was going to happen one hour before the system was brought on-line? She didn't know about it weeks before? Why aren't the other counties crying? I get tired of people complaining about the "State". Wasn't Pam Nelson paying attention?

Let's see From Pierre...let's look at the population of Minnehaha county vs. other counties. Even Codington county having huge issues, but still they don't have the population like we do.

When I was there, I noticed one man get people through a lot faster than the rest. Granted maybe they were dealing with other issues, but yes I probably agree that maybe some employee's know computers and programs much better than others. I feel bad for the older employee's, but I think "me" has a good point.

Reading the story,it just shows how Pam thinks that she is running the show and she is the Boss, my way or the highway! Seems to me she is just set in her ways and won't even give the new system a chance. I live elsewhere and Thank goodness I do! I think she needs to find another job!!!!! If I were the commissioners she would have been canned on the spot after her little performance!!!
